Overall Impression:

The Unistellar eVscope eQuinox Smart Telescope is a good middle ground for someone wants decent imaging without the complexity of a standard astrophotography setup. The user interface with a smart phone or tablet is impressive and easy to use, which is an improvement over GoTo handsets of other brands. This telescope is a clear upgrade over competitors like the Celestron NexStar 8SE and worth the extra money.

Summary:

The Unistellar eVscope eQuinox Smart Telescope is an Alt/Azimuth Newtonian style telescope controlled using the Unistellar App on a smart phone or tablet. It has a 4 1/2 inch aperture with a focal length of 450mm. This setup is considered wide view which frames up some of the more poular deep space objects very nicely, but not as good for planetary imaging. I see this telescope as an excellent alternative to visual observing as you can easily view on the App which is more convenient than fumbling with eyepieces and struggling with focus. The image qualklity is good, but don’t expect to produce images like those captured by more serious astrophotography setups. On the flip side, though, it took me about a month of working with my astrophotography setup to capture my first decent image while the Unistellar eQuinox can take an image right out of the box on day one.

The Telescope:

The telescope is a Newtonian design with an 4 1/2 inch aperture, a focal length of 450mm, and a focal ratio of f/3.9. The telescope performs well in light polluted areas. The image resolution is 4.9Mpx which is an odd specification to quote, but relevant for this telescope since the only viewing is through the App.

The Mount:

The mount is very basic, but does the job. Everything is integrated in a tight package which makes setup very easy. The 12 hour battery is more than sufficient for a full night of viewing.
